Seventeen

“What do you mean, I ought to return to classes? I think I’m beyond help from the instructors here,” I said, but my words came out rushed and not exactly how I meant to say them.

“You think you have nothing left to learn, do you?” Headmaster Darius said, raising an eyebrow as he did so.

“No – that’s not what I meant,” I hurriedly replied. “Not completely, at least. I’m a Dragon Rider now; I ought to be figuring out what that means. Like, where is my dragon, for instance?”

“Aro will come to be what she will be in time,” he said, as if he knew something I did not.

“Do you really think so?” I asked, more worried about her than I cared to admit. She’d been sluggish of late, and resting more than before. I was worried she was sick, but I had no idea how to help her. There were more things that I needed to learn, but the Academy didn’t yet have the answers for me.

“The stone is gathering its strength again. At this rate, we can hatch the other egg in a week or two,” the headmaster said, showing me the stone, which he now kept locked in his desk.

“I think I need to take fewer classes from your instructors, and spend more time in the Library researching what it means to be a Dragon Rider,” I said, getting to the original point I’d come here to discuss.

“Study what you can in the time you have, but I think it would be prudent for us to get you to your family within the week. Those letters from your brother need to stop before more harm is done,” he replied sternly, reminding me of my next monumental task I had to accomplish.

“Right,” I said, wishing there was another way. “It isn’t enough that I pen him a letter?” I asked, to see if perhaps there was merit in my idea.

“With the disguise the Librarians can give you, it won’t be as risky as you might think going into the heart of the beast,” he said. “Besides, I thought you’d want to see your family.”

I wanted to see my family – more than I could say – but I also had so many things that needed tending to here. “Give me a week to get things in order, and I will go to my family and see what they are truly up to,” I said, turning the plans in my mind from mere thoughts to marching orders.

I would see to my studies and learn what I could about being a Dragon Rider. Then perhaps I would see to closing a Nether Gate, so that I could get more Essence and possibly rank up my Dragon Rider Core. It was still so odd to me I had such a duality going on between myself now – both Warden Rank 10 and Dragon Rider Rank 1.

I noticed a distinct lack of indicators around how much essence it took to advance as a Dragon Rider, so I wondered what that was about.
